As old glory folds, it's time to salute the citizens. When chef Brian Massie takes over Mandalay Bay's soon-to-shutter Red, White and Blue, it will be renamed Citizens and arrive with a new promotional tag of "Real Food. Real People."
The Light Group announced it was acquiring the leases of the adjoining China Grill and Red, White and Blue properties in August. An economical re-vamp of the American-themed restaurant continues the casual bistro concept, but will transform the old, unfocused design with a brighter upgrade and the introduction of urban hipster motifs.
A large Citizens sign, constructed from Broadway theater-style lightbulbs will sit above the existing glass frontage and doors, tweaked with new tiles and vintage-style Edison lights. The patio area loses the current fence and opts for open, black lacquer railings and adds eight ornate, tall lamp posts. The patio has room for 56 patrons outside, including eight stools at counters, perfect for viewing the casino floor.
Lighting is a strong focus of the new space, a warmer white lighting replacing the older colored bulbs, and introduces a diverse collection of hanging lamps and sconces. The 6,787-square-foot space has room inside for 175, including 12 at the bar. Mismatched photos, frames and artwork fill the walls. Varied textures, design accents and beveled subway tiles help the push for a Downtown feel.
A plethora of antique mirrors will replace existing moldings. The metallic theme is low key but prevalent, with pewters and muted metals complementing the warm lighting. While plans even include the possible re-purposing of chairs from China Grill, new banquettes will feature distinctive buttons and stitching.
The oyster bar will be removed, but Red, White and Blue's popular option of a take-out counter for sandwiches, gelato, coffee and pastries stays on. The grab and go counter will be overhauled, keeping the eight-stool seating area by the front doors.
Both China Grill and Red, White and Blue continue in their present form until Nov. 18. Citizens and the un-named Akira Back project next door have unannounced 2013 launch dates.
