VENETIAN — Chefs will compete at creating dishes using a mystery basket of ingredients on food trucks during the Golden Spoon Chef Competition during Winter in Venice. The competition takes place Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 14 and 21. All sous chefs and chefs de cuisine at the 30-plus restaurants located at the Venetian and the Palazzo can compete for the Golden Spoon Award. At the end of each competition, the dishes will be available for sale. Expect surprise appearances by Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich and Sammy DeMarco. [EaterWire]
DOWNTOWN — Two casinos plan to face off during the World Series with their own competition, the Fremont Street Series, to support their respective teams. The D Las Vegas, with its Detroit ties, and the Golden Gate, with its San Francisco roots, plan to support their respective teams, the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants, with the "winning" property offering fans $1 draft beers for a celebratory hour after the game at the D's Longbar (Detroit Tigers) and Golden Gate's Casino Bar (SF Giants). The first 50 Giants fans can also claim a free shrimp cocktail by saying "Go Giants!" at Club 1906 at the Golden Gate after each Giants win. The World Series starts tonight. [EaterWire]
