Sometimes second best is good enough. Liquor Library will open in the baggage claim area of McCarran International Airport's Terminal 1 on Nov. 5. In a national airport first, they'll be operating a liquor store that's not a duty-free shop.
Lee's Runway Liquor had won the initial contract bid, but failed to meet construction deadlines. Liquor Library's second place bid allowed them to step in, invest $500,000 and race to an Aug. 31 groundbreaking.
The library motif is practical and aesthetic. The limited square footage at their disposal requires bottles to be stacked vertically on bookshelves. Staffers will climb library ladders to reach any dizzy heights.
An original 2010 proviso for bidders on this boozy venture required Clark County to collect 15 percent of the store's gross revenues.
