You'll soon be able to rack 'em up at Downtown's Backstage Bar & Billiards Lounge. The 4,000-square-foot music and pool hall at 601 Fremont will open on Friday, Nov. 16. The name derives from its "backstage" proximity to owners Big Daddy Carlos and Ava Berman's main venture, the adjacent 10,000-square-foot Fremont Country Club venue. That under construction club will feature live music as many as four nights a week and is planning for an early 2013 opening.
Inside, furniture has been constructed from Anvil equipment cases. Music derives from the resident DJs, music guests and concerts projected on an 8-foot-by-20-foot movie screen theater behind the bar.
30,000 vinyl records are stored behind the DJ stage, a library available for all visiting disc spinners. When presented more than a year ago, plans included a video wrap awning on the building and a large corner sign with the name spelled out on 15 racked billiard balls. Like those plans, an FM radio station on the second floor is still touted, but waiting for fruition.
For their investment and redevelopment of the former Sears store, the building lease for "Triple B" has been abated to the city for five years.
