Sammy's Restaurant, Bar & Grill is just what restaurant-deprived Green Valley needed, Max Jacobson says, even if the locals haven't discovered that the joint serves breakfast at "7 a.m. sharp."
"Sammy's has a superior menu, one that includes terrific brioche French toast stuffed with an orange-scented mascarpone, and great breakfast pizzas, such as bacon and mushroom with free-range egg, tomato, red onion and cheddar cheese," he says, comparing the menu to the busy The Cracked Egg across the street.
He also calls out the eclectic menu with its hummus, baba ghannouj, lebni and flatbreads, chicken meatballs and miso-glazed eggplant as well as kung-pao calamari, spicy Thai grilled chicken and pork dumplings.
"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant"—a '60s tune that seems apropos in this context," Jacobson says.
Brock Radke gets the first bite out of Pizza Rock's new pizzas. "You should start with the Napoletana margherita? Then move to the Romana pie, a long rectangle of thin, crispy goodness. It's actually three pizzas in one, sort of appetizer-to-entree-to-dessert." The pizza Radke tried blended from "cherry tomatoes, black olives, basil garlic and sea salt" to "spicy sopressata, arugula, sharp parmigiano-reggiano and red pepper oil," to "fig preserves, prosciutto, gorgonzola and balsamic reduction." Erik Chudy calls the burger at Gordon Biersch "very juicy, flavorful and a huge surprise." He gives the Swiss and mushroom off-the-menu burger at the Paradise Road location an 89 out of 100. [VBB]
Al Mancini was disappointed that, "Bakery King isn't the type of mom-and-pop operation I was hoping to discover. It is, however, a damn fine bakery with great products at very reasonable prices." But he says everything he tasted — muffins, doughnuts, egg salad sandwiches, bagels and danishes — was good. [CL]
Heidi Knapp Rinella doles out an A- (seriously, is everything in Vegas A-worthy?) to La Comida, the newish Mexican restaurant from Michael Morton in Downtown Vegas. Seems her only beef with the restaurant was that it didn't have a Website. She gives the food a B+ and the atmosphere and service an A-. [LVRJ]
