Tropicana's Huge Strip Makeover Sounds Very Familiar

The Tropicana Las Vegas has taken notice of the ongoing construction diagonally across the street at New York-New York and is hoping some retail therapy will bring them out of the economic doldrums.

The resort is proposing to add a pharmacy, convenience store and a shopping center that will include a restaurant and outdoor dining. Further down Las Vegas Boulevard, Treasure Island is about to begin construction on a very similar concept, anchored by a CVS pharmacy.

Early plans for the Trop include these additions to the property on both the Strip and Tropicana Avenue and a makeover to alter the existing landscaping. The significant size of the project will create changes to the porte-cochere and hotel lobby entrances. Timetables for the remodeling will be revealed in November.

The Tropicana took a serious psychological hit back in August when their barely nine-month-old Bagatelle supper club, dayclub and nightclub operated by The One Group abruptly shuttered. Re-branded as the Havana Room, the club now operates as a hireable event space and pitches itself as a lavish destination for a "celebration after the ceremony for newlyweds, a quinceañera fit for a princess or an elaborate party for the whole company."
