Holy cow, was it a madcap scene at Al's Beef on opening day. Even at 3 p.m., the place was packed with diners who nabbed free sandwiches for volunteering on Martin Luther King Day, many donning Chicago sports team jerseys.

This Chicago sandwich favorite brings its first location to Las Vegas at the corner of Sahara Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard in the former Bollywood Grill space, adding a retro diner vibe.

The beloved Italian beef sandwich shop touts, "Our beef is pure. That's our motto to you, and has been since 1938."

On the menu find the namesake Italian beef, "roasted with 100% pure spices and natural juices." Homemade "hot" Giardinera or sweet peepers, provolone, cheddar or American cheese are 45 cents extra.

Burgers include the gorgonzola and bleu burger or the bunless cheese, all weighing in at one-third a pound and starting at $5.85. Char-grilled chicken sandwiches, gourmet salads such as "Dr A's Carb Buster "with chunky bleu dressing, and the "Big Boss" Caesar with romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, croutons and shredded parmesan make the menu as well as wraps covering chipotle, chicken and BLT.

The French fries here can be ordered topped with cheddar, chili, Buffalo and bleu cheese or loaded with bacon, green onion, cheddar cheese and sour cream on the side.
