Al Mancini says that Elizabeth Blau and Kim Canteenwalla’s new Andiron Steak & Sea at Downtown Summerlin "could be a game changer… Blau and Canteenwalla could very well be changing the way Summerlin dines." He recommends the foie gras, French onion soup, matzo balls "wrapped in bacon," sea urchin toast, farro risotto and 8-ounce rib-eye cap ("cooked to an exact medium rare, and had a tenderness that rivaled a good filet"). He says to avoid the mustard spätzle ("dry and tasteless") and steak tartare ("inconsistent"). "I have to admit that as much as I love nearly everything about this restaurant, and as much as foodies have been buzzing about it, I was slightly worried about its ability to find enough of an audience to fill the room.…But my fears appear to be unfounded." [VS]
Brock Radke declares that the pho at Pho Sing Sing "was the epiphany I had hoped for." He ordered the pho dac biet ("Sing Sing’s ‘special combination’"). "…maybe I’ll just keep ordering that pho, over and over again." [LVW]
Radke also visited Red Rice, the new Chamorro restaurant on Eastern Avenue and compares the fare there with Hawaiian and Philippine food. He recommends the Hafa Adai with barbecued chicken, a pork spare rib, empanada, green salad and chicken kelaguen, "a cold, citrus-blasted dish kinda like Peruvian ceviche," as well as the Fiesta Plate with "crispy lumpia, barbecued beef and shrimp patties."
