Tyrone Patterson has upgraded his Mamma's Boy Cafe soul food concept from a counter at the Campus Commons Food Court to a newly opened, full restaurant on Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Promising "love at first bite!" and "simply the best soul food of the west of Mississippi," their large portions are deliberate as he explains, "we believe in LEFTOVERS."
The menu includes smothered meat bowls over rice, featuring staples such as chicken, oxtail and pork chops, plus entrees of fried chicken and catfish. On the weekend, they prepare batches of seafood gumbo. Sides are highlighted by sweet candied yams, collard greens and black-eyed peas. The desserts include sweet potato pie and banana pudding.
Saturday and Sunday also adds smoked barbecue, creating dinners with beef hot links and rib bones and serving with two sides and a cornbread muffin.
