Revealed last September, but hibernating with any updates, the third local Black Bear Diner is now announcing it will take over shuttered Mad Greek Café this summer. Located at the Canyon Gate Shopping Center on the corner of Sahara Avenue and Durango Drive, The Mad Greek had been a tenant for more than a decade.
Black Bear takes over the 4,412-square-foot corner lot, plus the 1,700-square-foot space next door. Anchored by a Smith's, the highly visible site was simple for Mad Greek customers to spot, decorated with a distinctive blue and white Hellenic design and sculptures out front.
Fans of quirky restaurant architecture will note that those Greek statues will now be replaced by a wood carved waving "welcome bear" who stands guard at each Black Bear location. Already a popular choice for their large portions and comfort food, the chain expanded to Henderson early last year.
Next on the Nevada front, they will also be opening a diner at the Max Casino in Carson City this summer. And Mad Greek Café followers can still head to their remaining outposts in Primm, or their famous Baker, Calif., travelers stop.
