Pizza Restaurant Comes Close to Health Department Shutdown

SNHD came pretty close to shutting Sofia's Cafe down

Bradley Martin

Sofia’s Cafe, the pizza restaurant at 3380 S. Arville St., came within two points of being shut down by the Southern Nevada Health District after a routine inspection on Friday, May 20, revealed 39 demerits.

Health inspectors found staff not properly washing their hands, ineffective pest control measures, spoiled food, food unprotected from pest control measures, single use items reused and so much more.

Nine other inspections by SNHD since 2011 reveal a variety of grades, including two C grades in 2014 and 2015.

The health district conducts unannounced inspections at least once a year. Inspections are posted online about five days after the inspection. The Southern Nevada Health District routinely shuts down restaurants that receive more than 40 demerits. Restaurants have the option of requesting a re-inspection before the next scheduled inspection.
