Cafe El Mundo Cubano, the Cuban tapas bar and restaurant at 5741 W. Sahara Ave., was shut down by the Southern Nevada Health District on Wednesday, June 29, after a routine inspection uncovered an imminent health hazard.

Health inspectors found inadequate refrigeration, which caused the immediate shut down of the restaurant.

Staff not washing their hands, an inadequate number of sinks, ineffective pest control measures, grade cards not posted and more resulted in 31 demerits, a C grade.

Cafe El Mundo Cubano earned 39 demerits, two away from being shut down, in July 2015, along with two C grade inspections in 2014.

The health district conducts unannounced inspections at least once a year. Inspections are posted online about five days after the inspection. The Southern Nevada Health District routinely shuts down restaurants that receive more than 40 demerits. Restaurants have the option of requesting a re-inspection before the next scheduled inspection.
