It certainly isn’t the first location you’d consider when building a downtown gastropub, but the Henderson-based Robin Camacho Group believe it's discovered a diamond in the rough.

Dubbed the Social Studies Gastropub on the latest design renderings, the project will take over 710 and 712 First St., between Garces and Gass Ave. The current plan is to convert the garage portion of the two lots into a 3,128-square-foot tavern, featuring a bar, gaming machines and indoor dining with enough room inside and out for 151 guests.

Roll up doors will allow customers to enjoy the 3,936-square-foot patio, imagined as a combination beer garden and outdoor dining space. There is also a possibility the restaurant may add live entertainment to the mix.

The patio will not be open to the sparsely populated street, but only accessible through the tavern. The kitchen will specialize in "tasty, high quality food, and not the typical tavern fare" and will be prepared in a separate building to the rear of the property.

The entire project will remain locally owned and run and future partners are expected to come on board. A potential chef has not yet been proposed, nor a timetable for completion. The project is very quickly making its way through the city approval process.
