Pawn Plaza lands a new pizza restaurant serving what it dubs “unsung Grandma-style pizza.” The spot next to Gold & Silver Pawn Shop of Pawn Stars fame brings pizzaiolo Vincent Rotolo, formerly at Evel Pie in Fremont East, and his new place Good Pie.
The restaurant serves four pizza styles: the Grandma, Detroit, Brooklyn, and gluten-free, using ingredients from Italy’s Caputo Flour and Ciao Tomatoes, Brooklyn’s Mike’s Hot Honey and Aiello’s Cheese, Urban Seed produce, Urbani Truffles, and NUMU vegan cheese.
The menu features Brooklyn and “Grandma-style” pizzas or slices in cheese, white, vegan, and meat with sausage, meatball, pepperoni, and ham. Grandma, Brooklyn, and Detroit styles include versions with sausage and artichoke hearts; porcini mushrooms, truffles, wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, truffle oil, and thyme; sausage, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and garlic; and sausage, jalapeño, garlic, Calabrian chili, and Mike’s hot honey.
Other dishes on the tight menu include knots made with three kinds of garlic, homemade beef and pork meatballs, and calzone. Fat Sal’s cannoli and chocolate chip cookies round out the menu.
The small space features pictures of grandmothers of friends and colleagues along with wooden spoons, pizza peels, and vintage pizza cutters. Rotolo plans to play music from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stone. A bar seats eight customers, with additional seating within Pawn Plaza.
On opening day, 2016 World Champion pizza maker Nino Coniglio of New York’s Brooklyn Pizza Crew and 2017 Caputo Cup champion Derek Sanchez of Texas’ Mia Marco Pizza work in the kitchen as part of Pizza Across America, which benefits Slice Out Hunger. Good Pie also plans to serve $1 slices from noon to 2 p.m. with proceeds benefiting Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.
Pawn Plaza previously hosted Inna Gadda di Pizza until it closed in 2016.
