Steakhouse Dishes Out Vintage Humor with Those Chops

Cleaver offers a classic steakhouse vibe

The newest steakhouse on the eastside serves up a dash of vintage humor with those cuts of beef. Nectaly Mendoza’s Cleaver features multiple dining rooms filled with “Replaceface” portraits that use artwork from British artist George Dawe’s images of generals during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia as a starting point. Then digital images of celebrities replace the Russian generals. Comedians Robin Williams, Chris Farley, and Eddie Murphy, actors including Patrick Swayze, Mr. T, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Mickey Rourke, and wrestler John Cena deck the walls in military gear.

One dining room, dubbed the Murray Room with an image of Billy Murray, seats 25, but can open up to space for 216. The room also houses a vintage chandelier from the former The Dunes hotel. Mendoza used a similar wallpaper pattern found at his Herbs & Rye on the walls.

The wine cellar comes enclosed in glass with just a portion of the 1,400 bottles from the 285 label collection.
