The Southern Nevada Health District closed Thai Original BBQ at 4180 S. Jones Boulevard after finding unsanitary conditions during a routine inspection on January 3. Inspectors found a trench measuring two feet by two feet covered by a greasy piece of plywood in the kitchen, as well as grease overflowing into the sewer. The restaurant remains closed. The health department previously closed the restaurant in 2015.
The health department shut down Don Chuy Mexican Grill at 7080 S. Jones Boulevard after a routine inspection on January 2 found inadequate refrigeration in the restaurant. Food in the restaurant was held at unsafe temperatures. The health department reinspected the restaurant the same day and it reopened with a zero-demerit A grade.
The health department also closed Kenya’s Catering food truck on January 2 when it had no hot water. Inspectors also found ingredients such as ham, cheese, and chorizo held at unsafe temperatures. The food truck reopened on January 3 with a zero-demerit A grade.
The health department closed another food truck, Chamango Mexican, during First Friday on January 3 because it had no water, an imminent health hazard. Inspectors found containers of cooked corn on the floor and some employees were working without health cards.
Las Pupusas at 4760 S. Eastern Avenue earned a 39-demerit C grade after a routine inspection on December 31. Aside from the bathrooms not functioning, an imminent health hazard calling for an immediate closing, inspectors found 11-day-old shrimp broth and nine-day-old tamales, according to KTNV. Excessive grease and old food covered the floors, walls, and equipment, while employees made horchata in a three-compartment sink next to dirty dishes. The restaurant also did not have a person in charge working during the inspection. The restaurant reopened on January 8 with a three-demerit A grade.
The health district conducts unannounced inspections at least once a year. Inspections are posted online about five days after the inspection. The Southern Nevada Health District routinely shuts down restaurants that receive more than 40 demerits. Restaurants have the option of requesting a re-inspection before the next scheduled inspection.
