Under an iconic neon sign, a 2,640-square-foot, stand-alone downtown building has been serving Mexican dishes on Main Street since 1950 as a home to the much-missed El Sombrero Cafe and most recently, El Zaguán Mexican Bistro. And now comes word a favorite local chef will continue the dining tradition, but offering a fast-casual experience.
Located at 807 S. Main Street, just inside the northern border of the Arts District, restaurateur Leticia Mitchell recently filed paperwork to create Letty’s, a taqueria featuring traditional Mexican tortas, street tacos, and a casual spin on her own full-service Leticia’s Mexican Cocina, still open at the Fiesta Station.
Work will soon begin remodeling the kitchen hood system, while the interior space has already been overhauled in recent years, following Irma Aguirre’s takeover of El Sombrero in 2014 and last year’s short-lived residency by the El Zaguán Mexican Bistro and its vegan-focused dishes.
Announced as “coming soon,” chef Mitchell previously operated restaurants at Tivoli Village and The Village of Centennial Springs. A second Leticia’s Mexican Cocina is currently unable to reopen at the Fiesta Henderson until the resort returns to full operations.
Born in Mexico City, Mitchell’s influences include the flavors of Puebla, Guadalajara, and the Mayan peninsula. Future opening hours downtown have not been revealed.
