A look back at some of the saddest closings of the year

The inevitable happens all the time in Las Vegas; another restaurant or bar closes. Some come as no surprise. Others break the hearts of fans. Here, a look back at some of the saddest restaurant closings of 2018.

Andre’s Bistro & Bar calls it quits

Fans of Andre’s Bistro & Bar in the southwest wondered whether the restaurant was closed for repairs or shuttered for good. On Wednesday night, news dropped that the restaurant, which opened almost two years ago as an ode to chef Andre Rochat, closed for good.

Joe Marsco, the director of operations and one of the partners in parent company Stacked Hospitality, posted the news on Facebook: “I wanted to take a moment and apologize for all of the mis-messaging and communications over the past couple of days. It came as some surprise to all of us when we found that some partners had decided that an immediate closure of Andre’s Bistro & Bar was the best possible decision for the time being. Chef Andre had recently requested that his name no longer be part of the restaurant that was to be an homage to him after the closure of Andre’s at the Monte Carlo. We had been coordinating a re-brand and re-launch of Andre’s Fort Apache location but many of those plans as we now know are not going to be. I want to thank our wonderful staff and wish them well as they deserve the very best and the many customers that have become great friends for their patronage and continued support over the many years.”

Rochat, one of the pioneers of the fine dining scene in Las Vegas, opened his original restaurant in Downtown Las Vegas in 1980. That moved to the Monte Carlo and closed in 2016. He also had Alizé at the top of the Palms, now home to Vetri Cucina.

An oversaturation of dining is the cause

Chinatown certainly sees its share of restaurant closings, sometimes with a place shuttering to open quickly as a new pan-Asian place. Wendy’s Noodle Cafe made it almost 10 years before closing in the busy neighborhood now stacked with restaurants spanning cuisine from China and Japan, Vietnam and Korea, and more.

“We are sad to inform you that Wendy’s Noodle Cafe’s last day of service will be tomorrow Wednesday, November 28, 2018. The team at Wendy’s Noodle Cafe thanks our friends, family, and customers for all of your support. We are so happy to have served you these years,” the restaurant posted on its Facebook page.

Wendy’s Noodle Cafe specialized in Hong Kong and Chaozhou cuisine and featured wonton noodles, pan-fried rice cakes, steamed egg custard, mango tapioca, and durian crepes. Wendy Lee opened the restaurant in 2009. Lee showcased her previous work at Chang’s Hong Kong Cuisine & Dim Sum.

Lee tells an Eater Vegas tipster that the oversaturation of restaurants in Chinatown caused her to close. She plans to regroup and perhaps open a new space in 2019.

A new location and new downtown vendor for its menu

A year after shuttering its original downtown location, Bronze Cafe has closed out its location inside The Market on Fremont East.

Long rumored, The Market filed permits to beak up the former grocery store and deli into leasable spaces earlier this year.

Bronze Cafe will make a move eight miles to the northwest and take over the vacated home of Scratch Made bakery, close to the corner of Buffalo Drive and Smoke Ranch Road.

The gluten-free Scratch Made concept will itself head in the opposite direction and host a grand opening on Nov. 24 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Arts District’s C3 Lofts, a brand new, $14 million apartment building at 1005 Third St., located a short distance from Charleston Boulevard.

Bronze Cafe has announced a return date of Dec. 3, 2018, “open daily for delivery and takeout and catering” and in early 2019 the cafe hopes to create a dining room at the front of the space, following a series of renovations.

That same December day, the restaurant will also be exporting their “sammiches, salads, and sweets” for sale at downtown’s Smooth Eats at the John E. Carson Building, just around the corner from The Market.

Bronze Cafe originally opened in April 2013 at the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada on Southern Maryland Parkway, now replaced by the Little Rainbow Cafe.

Down to two local locations for the “breastaurant” concept

Debuting in April 2015, Hooters has shuttered in Henderson, a former 24-hour home of wings, drinks, sports, and round-the-clock video gaming.

The very visible location at 10430 S. Eastern Ave. was previously operated by Carmine’s Italian Grille & Gaming Lounge and the roomy 8,086-square-foot space had been upgraded with a new patio, fire pit, and views of “the entire Vegas Valley.”

A “cantina” concept has quickly taken up residency, yet to update its menu and future opening hours.

Also still in business at the off-Strip Hooters Casino Hotel, the casino floor restaurant has long been promoted as the company's flagship and nationwide highest earning expansion.
