Vanguard Lounge plans to close

Vanguard Lounge, the Fremont East bar, calls it quits at the end of the year. The nearly 10-year-old lounge, one of the first to open in the revamped Fremont East entertainment district, tells fans on Facebook that after New Year’s Eve, the venue closes.

“Vanguard Lounge is closing after almost 9 ½ years of providing a great Entertainment venue with amazing drinks and a wonderful service on Fremont East. We will be closed after New Year’s Eve. During the years we have received many awards and accolades from Las Vegas. During the next few weeks many of our past bartenders and DJ’s will be returning for a final performance at The Vanguard. Isaiah Thornton will be back hosting at the Vanguard for the final two weeks with many Guest Bartenders and DJ’s. So keep The Vanguard Lounge on your social media radar for all the events and guests that will be returning during December. We will be open Christmas Eve and Night. We want to thank our amazing Vanguard Staff, DJ’s, Security and Entertainment Directors over the years. And all the fans and guests of Vanguard Lounge that have made us a success! It has been an amazing journey! Cheers Peter & Jennifer”

Vanguard Lounge opened in 2010 with modern twists on classic cocktails, as well as a roster of beers and boutique wines. Customers could sit out on the patio or listen to deejays seven nights a week.

Jennifer Metzger and Dillon Reese of Vanguard filed plans to open Lock & Key, a cocktail lounge on Casino Center Boulevard, designed with combination of vintage glamour and urban chic, back in October. Lock & Key takes its inspiration from the building’s previous locksmith tenant. Repurposed safes become the tables, while a photo feature wall comes decorated with door knobs. This project has yet to be announced.

Kaos closes while the resort reassesses

Kaos, the nightclub and dayclub that opened in March at the Palms, closed abruptly today.

Michael Britt, the senior vice president of government relations and corporate communications for parent company Red Rock Resorts Inc., says in a statement: “This afternoon, Red Rock Resorts, Inc. announced the closing of Kaos dayclub and nightclub at the Palms Casino Resort, effective immediately. While Palms has experienced exceptional growth across both the gaming and non-gaming segments of the business, the expense side of the business has been challenging to date, due in large part to the entertainment and fixed cost structure associated with Kaos. Therefore, we have decided to take some time to reassess the programming and use of those venues going forward. In the interim, we intend to use the venues for private meeting space and special events, in addition to everyday resort pool operations.”

On Halloween, the nightclub revealed a dome covering the pool area and meant to keep the party going outside through March.

The 73,000-square-foot dayclub claimed the highest number of pools of any resort in North America when it debuted. Partiers could walk into the venue passing by Damien Hirst’s 23-foot tall sculpture The Warrior and the Bear to find two main pools, numerous side pools, and 39 cabanas, most with their own private pool. At the center of the main pools, a 65-foot bronze sculpture by Damien Hirst entitled Demon with Bowl. The venue, designed by Friedmutter Group Las Vegas, also features a 270-foot LED screen that interacts with the music on the exterior of the resort’s Ivory Tower.

The closing comes more than a month after Jon Gray, the vice president and general manager of the Palms, departed the company. The week before his resignation, the nightclub canceled a $60 million residency with the deejay Marshmello. The nightclub and pool closed temporarily on Sept. 15 to install the new dome, broken in by rapper Cardi B.

Pub 1842 closes to make way for International Smoke

One thing diners can always count on with Michael Mina — he’s always willing to change things up when they’re not working. The chef opened Pub 1842, an ode to beers, at the MGM Grand, back in 2013, taking over his former Seablue space at the resort. Now that restaurant plans to close in November to make way for an ode to smoke-infused dishes from Mina and Family Food Fight host Ayesha Curry.

The two collaborate on International Smoke, opening this December with wood-fired dishes meant for what Curry calls “the adventurous eater to the one who doesn’t stray from classics.”

Already, the menu teases include smoked St. Louis cut pork ribs, a dish diners can spice with smokey mama sauce, Vietnamese lemongrass with Saigon streusel, or Korean sesame-gochujang with toasted black sesame seeds; a shellfish platter heaped with charcoal-grilled oysters, shrimp, lobster, and crab are served hot and steamed table side with lemon grass tea; a cornbread from Curry served with Thai red curry butter; and more.

Curry and Mina debuted International Smoke in 2016 as a pop-up at Mina Test Kitchen in San Francisco before opening their first location in 2017. MGM Grand will be the restaurant’s fifth location, joining San Diego, Houston, Aventura, Florida, and San Francisco locations. Cafe To Go and the Laurel Lounge also closed at the resort to make way for the new restaurant, teased by Caesars Entertainment to open in early 2020.

The Flamingo already filed paperwork for estimated $5.5 million renovation for a steakhouse dubbed Steaks & Alibis.

“The new steakhouse will pay homage to the resort’s iconic history of more than 70 years, while serving fresh and intriguing dishes in a modern, chic design. The steakhouse will be located where Center Cut, Café To Go and the Laurel Lounge were located,” Caesars Entertainment says in a press statement.

Center Cut opened in 2012 in the former Burger Joint space with a roster of rib-eye steaks and porterhouses that used beef sourced from Aspen Ridge Farms in Colorado. The black and white décor with pink accents gave the restaurant a classic Vegas atmosphere.
