Hot chicken is coming to the corner of Main Street and California Avenue

Houston Crosta is wasting no time expanding his hot chicken sandwich concept and new details confirm his scheduled move to the Arts District will create a family-friendly tribute to local sports teams. Houston’s Hot Chicken takes over the prominent corner space at 1201 S. Main Street with a 2,464-square-foot sports bar that plans to display signed memorabilia from local athletes, plus decor celebrating Las Vegas sports teams including the Raiders, Aviators, Aces, Golden Knights, and Lights. Already equipped with a distinctive curved front entrance, one section of the restaurant will welcome families, while the adult lounge area features its own bar.

The sports bar sits between the Cream Me Ice Creamery on Main Street and Yu-Or-Mi Sushi Bar on California Avenue. Later this fall, local institution Freed’s Bakery is on track to debut a retail-only outlet next door.

While Houston’s hasn’t revealed a potential menu or possible opening date, its Green Valley Parkway outpost in Henderson focuses on sandwiches and tenders. Prepared with heat levels ranging from zero to “liftoff,” waivers must be signed by diners attempting to eat its food challenge-worthy chicken pieces spiced with 2 million Scoville Heat Units of fieriness.

Still in the works, an announced expansion to West Ann Road and into Fashion Show mall on the Strip. Crosta is also co-owner of southwest sandwich restaurant Egg Sammie, currently closed while it undergoes a remodel.

National touring bands and a speakeasy vibe head to Main Street

A new music venue headed to the Arts District imports an “elegant dive bar vibe” and a decade of success booking national touring acts in Austin, Texas. Harvey Graham, who operates Downtown’s Oddfellows on the ground floor of the Ogden condominium tower, will oversee Swan Dive when it opens. Graham is well-known in Austin as a nightlife entrepreneur for his Barbarella bar and the original Swan Dive space, a fixture on Red River Street since 2012.

The Las Vegas location heads to the second floor of The Colorado, a still under construction, mixed-use building at 1301 S. Main Street. Swan Dive’s 5,583-square-foot interior will be upgraded with a 3,952-square-foot outdoor viewing deck. The main bar area will serve customers indoors and out, with patio seating looking down on both Main Street and Colorado Avenue.

The venue plans to keep long, daily hours from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. with an interior imagined as a “vintage, dilapidated speakeasy,” an echo of the white and gray color-scheme at the Texas location, frequently hired for photography and video shoots.

Yet to reveal an estimated debut date, plans submitted to the City of Las Vegas do not include a kitchen facility.

Making a splash in the emerging Gateway District bar and restaurant scene takes imagination and a new proposed restaurant headed to Commerce Street can guarantee it conjured up a truly original concept. Liquid Diet filed paperwork to move into suite 130 at 1415 S. Commerce Street, planning a considerable overhaul of the 1,344-square-foot building and adding a 480-square-foot rear patio. The restaurant sits about 60 feet back from the street, and future customers will walk through the small parking lot, past new murals, and enter a themed space “telling a story of post-civilization recovery.”

The menu focuses on fresh and healthy ingredients, and inside and out, the space will be upgraded with a woodland decor. Some of the teased highlights include costume-wearing staff pouring specialty fresh-pressed beverages and “unexpected immersive entertainment.” Project applicant Bret Pfister is a veteran local performer and director, and was most-recently seen in The Miss Behave Gameshow at the Bally’s resort. An estimated debut date was not revealed.

On Lake Mead Boulevard and Buffalo Drive, Crab N Spice plans to open a 3,229-square-foot restaurant with seafood boils.

Co-owner McMillian (Ian) Latayan recommends garlic noodles or Cajun pasta when the restaurant opens, hopefully in October. Diners can choose a sauce from options that range from mild spicy to spicy Assin8 and then use it on a variety of seafood such as crab legs, Dungeness crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, crawfish, and more ordered by the pound. Diners can add sausage, corn, quail eggs, or potatoes to their bags as well.

Lake Mead Boulevard in suite 100 near Grape Street Cafe will feature decorations reminiscent of a pier setting with wood beams with ropes and pine wood and bricks on the walls.
The Nightmare Café started construction downtown

The veil of mystery has been lifted. An ambitious downtown expansion will stretch retailer Nightmare Toys into the space next door and bring a unique, horror-themed bar and restaurant to the southern edge of the Arts District.

The Nightmare Café will move into 1307 S. Commerce Street at the intersection with Colorado Avenue and replace a series of auto shop tenants. Paperwork originally filed with the city late last year included applications for permits to add new restrooms, a kitchen and bar, and also dropped hints that barbecue would feature on the menu.

The exterior has been updated with a plywood mural featuring portraits of Pennywise and Friday the 13th icon Jason Voorhees, created by Tony Castillo and Derek Douglas of The Wall Saints. The team was previously responsible for the indoor murals at close neighbors SerVehZah Craft Beer Bottle Shop & Taproom.

Launched in summer 2020, Nightmare Toys quickly became a local hot spot for horror film celebrity appearances and signings, as well as a go-to destination for fans tracking down collectibles, masks, and costumes.

Taverna Costera is back on track for a spring opening along with Dragon’s Alley Coffee Co.

Pushing to be fully operational by the first Friday in May, “at the latest,” Taverna Costera and sibling venture Dragon’s Alley Coffee Co. are confidently promising Arts District visitors they will be able to host Mother’s Day brunch on the rooftop or out on the courtyard patio.

Developed by local entrepreneur Jeff Hwang and very unlucky to begin construction during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic shutdowns, Taverna Costera will soon become the dining centerpiece of the 1st & Main mixed-use complex at 1031 S. First St.

Overseen by chef Ray Samlow, the self-described “Coastal Mediterranean fusion” restaurant’s original plans included a nine-seat bar and room for 42 people inside, serving a menu inspired by “coastal French, Italian, Spanish, and Greek cuisines and beyond.”

On the ground floor, Dragon’s Alley Coffee Co. has taken its cue from European coffee shops and expects to be open daily from 7 a.m. until late, featuring cold brew coffee, boba drinks, and fine teas, plus a fast-casual menu for to-go orders.

Facing First Street, the two-story, 4,124-square-foot building was designed with 16-foot ceilings and 14-foot tall windows. In the future, Hwang also envisages a bar addition to the rooftop and a small stage to host live entertainment.
